Asylum Seekers Deserve Better
I am sad to see the recent news on the Migrant Protection Protocols (“MPP”). It is critical that the current administration does not go back to some of the more brutal border policies of the previous president and that they fight and appeal with everything that they have because MPP, or “Remain in Mexico”, was a disaster for this country. The United States forced thousands of non-Mexican asylum-seekers to wait in dangerous border cities for months while they were applying for protection in the United States. There are documented reports of hundreds of people being kidnapped, assaulted, and raped when pushed into these brutal conditions.
While we are far from the border here in the Midwest, as advocates we are in the fight for justice together and we cannot return to this inhumane program. While the states of Texas and Missouri are trying to force the president’s hand by going to the courts, I want the Biden administration to know that average citizens like myself do not support these policies and The U.S. and Mexico governments should make every effort to discontinue this policy. Asylum-seekers should have fair, safe access to our immigration courts and as the Chicago immigration court sees an increase in recently arrived individuals the last few months, please consider donating to the Midwest Immigrant Bond Fund to continue supporting the immigrant community.
Me entristece ver las noticias recientes sobre los Protocolos de Protección al Migrante (“MPP”). Es fundamental que la administración de Biden no vuelva a algunas de las políticas fronterizas más brutales del anterior presidente y que luchen y apelen con todo lo que tienen porque el MPP, o “Permanecer en México,” fue un desastre para este país. Los Estados Unidos obligó a miles de personas pidiendo asilo, que no son de México, a esperar en peligrosas ciudades fronterizas durante meses mientras solicitaban protección en Estados Unidos. Hay informes documentados de cientos de personas secuestradas, agredidas y violadas cuando se las empuja a estas condiciones brutales.
Estamos lejos de la frontera aquí en el Medio Oeste, pero como defensores estamos juntos en la lucha por la justicia y no podemos regresar a este programa inhumano. Mientras los estados de Texas y Missouri están tratando de forzar la mano del presidente yendo a los cortes, quiero que la administración Biden sepa que los ciudadanos promedio como yo no apoyamos estas políticas y el gobierno de los Estados Unidos y México debería hacer todo lo posible para descontinuar este política. Los solicitantes de asilo deben tener un acceso justo y seguro a nuestros tribunales de inmigración y, dado que el tribunal de inmigración de Chicago ve un aumento en las personas recién llegadas en los últimos meses, considere hacer una donación al Fondo de fianzas para Inmigrantes del Medio Oeste para continuar apoyando a la comunidad de inmigrantes.
