Faith and Justice in Dane Co., Wisconsin
Wisconsin Faith Voices for Justice is an interfaith education and advocacy organization with a wide social and economic justice agenda. We work with clergy and faith communities to provide tools and resources to enable people of faith to be effective advocates for justice.
In the aftermath of the 2016 presidential election, we called together some of our activists to debrief from the election and to consider what our role was as a faith community in combating the hate speech, Islamophobia, misogyny, and anti-immigrant rhetoric that filled so much of the campaign. A representative from Voces de la Frontera was at that meeting, and he said, “What the immigrant community most needs from the faith community is Sanctuary.” Immigration issues up to then had not been on our agenda, but we took up the call.
Over the next year and a half, we educated ourselves and our congregations about immigration issues and the need for sanctuary. In July 2017, we officially launched the Dane Sanctuary Coalition (Dane County being the county in which we are located), in partnership with Voces de la Frontera and Centro Hispano. We do this work as people of faith who believe each of us is created in the image of God and endowed with inherent worth and dignity. For the Jewish Scriptures, we are enjoined to treat the immigrant among us the same as the citizen. Christian text speaks to the values of love and caring for those among us who need our help. People of all faiths believe we all have a responsibility to look out for one another. We cannot turn our backs when called upon to stand with those oppressed and in need.
The Dane Sanctuary Coalition (https://danesanctuarycoalition.org/) today consists of three host sites ready to take someone into sanctuary. Each host site houses two congregations, so that represents six congregations. An additional 18 congregations and seven non-profit organizations are ready to support the host congregations. In 2019, we hosted an asylum-seeking family in one of our congregations for three months, until they were able to find stable housing. The Dane Sanctuary Coalition advocates for immigrant rights and immigrant justice, including advocating for legal drivers licenses for undocumented residents and in-state tuition for DACA recipients, as well as a pathway to citizenship. We have raised funds to support two free legal clinics for immigrants. We have helped to find temporary housing for people leaving detention. And we run a volunteer driver program to take people on the 180-mile round-trip to Milwaukee for their Immigration and Customs Enforcement check-ins or the three-hour drive to Chicago for their immigration hearings.
The mission of the Midwest Immigration Bond Fund is exactly in line with our mission. We are happy to support this effort in whatever way we can.

La Coalición Dane Sanctuary lucha por los derechos de los inmigrantes y la justicia de los inmigrantes, incluida la defensa de licencias de conducir legales para los residentes indocumentados y la matrícula estatal para los beneficiarios de DACA, así como un camino hacia la ciudadanía. Hemos recaudado fondos para apoyar dos clínicas legales gratuitas para inmigrantes. Hemos ayudado a encontrar una vivienda temporal para las personas que salen de la detención. Y llevamos a cabo un programa de conductores voluntarios para llevar a las personas en un viaje de ida y vuelta de 180 millas a Milwaukee para sus registros de inmigración y control de aduanas o el viaje de tres horas a Chicago para sus audiencias de inmigración.
