All We Have Left Is Humanity

I am a board member of the Midwest Immigration Bond Fund Coalition (MIBFC) and a program director with the Interfaith Community for Detained Immigrants (ICDI). I manage Chicago Immigrant Transit Assistance (CITA), an official program of ICDI serving asylum seekers at the Greyhound bus station in Chicago. We serve recently-arrived asylum seeking families and individuals. When I started as a volunteer over two years ago, I was 21 years old and I would meet asylum seekers all the time that were around the same age. I immediately was shocked and horrified that I could live my life of full time work and school while other twenty year olds were seeking asylum in a brand new country with usually just the clothes on their backs. I began to see aspects of my own parents in the parents I would meet at the bus station. I thought to myself, “Wow, this mother is doing everything in her power to protect and provide a life for her children.” When I saw fathers comforting their scared children and carrying their exhausted kids in their arms, I saw my own father carrying me as a child. If we were facing imminent danger, he would do the same to protect me. Quite quickly I realized those 21 year old Central American asylum seekers that I met are me. They are me and you, and they are my parents and your parents. I realized that the only thing left to the names of these asylum seekers was their humanity, the most overlooked aspect of an immigrant. 

I dedicate everyday to my work at MIBFC and ICDI to support immigrants leaving immigrant detention. Whether immigrants come seeking asylum and relief from persecution or displacement, or simply seeking a life with better opportunities for their children, all immigrants deserve to be welcomed and safe. No human being deserves family separation and incarceration just for being born in another country. No human being should be held in a jail setting for a civil offense. If it can happen to one person, then it can happen to us all. I dedicate my time to operating the bond payments and donate monthly to MIBFC because I have witnessed the freedom of leaving ICE detention because we could make it possible for 13 people.

Todo Lo Que Nos Queda Es Humanidad

Soy miembro del la coalición del fondo de fianzas de inmigración del Medio-Oeste y director de una programa de la Comunidad Interreligiosa para Inmigrantes Detenidos (ICDI, según las letras en inglés). Administro un programa se llama Asistencia de Tránsito para Inmigrantes de Chicago (CITA, según las letras en inglés), un programa oficial de ICDI que apoya a los solicitantes de asilo en la estación de autobuses Greyhound en Chicago. Servimos a familias e individuos buscando asilo recién-llegados. Cuando comencé como voluntario hace más de dos años, tenía 21 años y conocía todo el tiempo a las personas buscando asilo que tenían aproximadamente la misma edad. Inmediatamente me sorprendió y horrorizó que pudiera vivir mi vida de trabajo y universidad mientras otros veinte años buscaban asilo en un país nuevo, generalmente con solo la ropa que llevaban puesta. Comencé a ver aspectos de mis propios padres en los padres que conocía en la estación de autobuses. Pensé para mis adentros: "Va, esta madre está haciendo todo lo que está en su poder para proteger y dar vida a sus hijos". Cuando vi a los padres consolando a sus hijos asustados y llevando a sus hijos exhaustos en sus brazos, vi a mi propio padre llevándome cuando era niño. Si nos enfrentáramos a un peligro inminente, él haría lo mismo para protegernos. Rápidamente me di cuenta de que esos centroamericanos buscando asilo también de 21 años que conocí eran yo mismo. Estas personas son tú y yo, y son mis padres y tus padres. Me di cuenta de que lo único que quedaba en manos de los nombres de estas personas buscando asilo era su humanidad, el aspecto más pasado por alto de un inmigrante.

Me dedico todos los días a mi trabajo en ICDI y como miembro de MIBFC para apoyar a los inmigrantes que salen de la detención de inmigrantes. Ya sea que los inmigrantes vengan en busca de asilo y alivio de la persecución o el desplazamiento, o simplemente en busca de una vida con mejores oportunidades para sus hijos, todos los inmigrantes merecen ser bienvenidos y seguros. Ningún ser humano merece la separación familiar y el encarcelamiento solo por haber nacido en otro país. Ningún ser humano debe estar en una cárcel por una ofensa civil. Si le puede pasar a una persona, nos puede pasar a todos. Dedico mi tiempo a operar los pagos de fianzas y yo dono mensualmente a MIBFC porque he sido testigo de la libertad de salir de la detención de ICE porque pudimos hacerlo posible para 13 personas.
