Local Sunday School in Nashville, IN Takes Action

I am part of a socially active Methodist Sunday School group in Nashville, Indiana.  We have become active supporters of some immigration rights groups in the past, such as Annunciation House in Texas. This organization provides food, shelter, and clothing to migrants at the border. Members of our Sunday school group have made trips with their vehicles full of clothing, diapers and other necessities and have then stayed for two weeks as volunteers. You can imagine how excited we were to hear a presentation about the Midwest Immigration Bond Fund and the opportunity to help locally with those facing unwarranted detention. We learned more about the fund and the good work they are doing right here in Indiana and the Midwest. We learned that many facing mandatory detention are not even given the opportunity to post a bond and those that do receive a bond are often the victim of unscrupulous bondsmen that charge outrageous fees to families that cannot afford to pay. The incarcerated are often held in jails hundreds of miles from family members, without adequate medical care, recreational facilities, or access to their attorneys. Our Sunday school group was astonished to learn that this very expensive multi-million dollar inefficient incarceration system is completely unnecessary. We learned that government statistics confirm that many families in immigration court appear at all their scheduled hearings. Our group was totally surprised that more Americans weren't aware of this fact and should also be questioning why we continue to jail immigrants unnecessarily. One of our members said we just have to get this information out there, because there is no reason for this to continue. We decided to support the Midwest Immigration Bond Fund and in just the few days after the presentation we have already donated over $2,380.00. Nos enteramos de que muchos que enfrentan la detención obligatoria ni siquiera tienen la oportunidad de pagar una fianza y los que sí reciben una fianza a menudo pueden ser víctimas de fiadores sin escrúpulos que cobran tarifas escandalosas a las familias que no pueden pagar.
