Rejecting the deserving vs. undeserving immigrant narrative
All organizations exist for a reason, with different missions and messaging, but the notion that one group over another is “better” is flawed and does not belong in any conversations about the community - including the immigrant community. Often times, undocumented immigrants, detained immigrants, or individuals with a criminal history, are seen as not the “model immigrant"” by the media and/or organizations and/or politicians. Everyone is deserving of support and representation as our values indicate, “The MIBFC believes that all individuals, without qualification, deserve dignity and respect and that the detention of individuals facing a deportation hearing is unnecessary.”
This week we want to share a story form the New Yorker titled “The Flawed Idea of the Perfect Immigrant” text by Danielle Mackney and Video by Maya Cueva.
Check out this powerful short-film telling the story of Ale Pablos, a reproductive justice organizer who was criminalized and targeted by ICE a few years ago. She is still fighting to be free, and lifting up the importance of rejecting the deserving vs. undeserving immigrant narrative, and the fallacy that citizenship would ultimately protect people from criminalization.
