Fianza Friday: Jan. 15, 2021

We are almost to our goal of $15,000 by February 1st, but we need your support. Please donate if you can, and share this post so that we can get to our goal and free people from detention! For some perspective this Fianza Friday, we share the words of Romelia, one of MIBFC's ambassadors:

Whether by incarceration or detention, by COVID-19 or violence, when you lose a loved one, by separation or death, it is a double-loss. 

We should value the lives of these individuals without qualification, but the stigma around prison and detention is a dehumanizing thing. 

It makes it easy to put people away and forget about them, to justify harming them, because they somehow ‘deserve’ to die disproportionately and tragically. 

Maybe it helps get people involved if they know that these individuals have families and friends who are suffering too. 

That when they put these individuals out of their minds,
they are punishing their families too. 

I was 5 years old when I first lost my dad,
and then I lost him again permanently when I was 19. 

That little 5 year old, she needed someone to fight for her. 

I will never fully heal from those losses, but I am fighting for people like my dad, and families like mine, and little girls like me. 

And every time someone joins me in this fight, I am hopeful. 

I feel like I can wake up and fight another day. 

We have a $15,000 goal to reach for the Bond Fund, and if we reach it we will be able to get people out of detention, out of a dangerous situation with COVID-19 right now.

We will be able to bring families back together. 

That’s not small. For that little 5 year old girl, that’s life-changing.

I am not saying she won’t know struggle, she will. But she won’t have to struggle as much. She’ll have a chance to be a kid. And she knows there was someone fighting for her and her family.

Estamos casi en nuestra meta de $15,000 pero necesitamos su apoyo. Por favor, donen si pueden, y compartan este mensaje para que podamos llegar a nuestra meta y liberar a la gente de la detención! Para tener alguna perspectiva este viernes de fianza, compartimos las palabras de Romelia, una de las embajadoras del MIBFC:

Ya sea por encarcelamiento o detención, por COVID-19 o violencia, cuando pierdes a un ser querido, por separación o muerte, es una doble pérdida.

Debemos valorar la vida de estas personas sin cualificación, pero el estigma en torno a la prisión y la detención es algo deshumanizante.

Hace que sea fácil apartar a las personas y olvidarse de ellas, para justificar el daño, porque de alguna manera "merecen" morir de manera desproporcionada y trágica.

Quizás ayude a que las personas se involucren, si saben que estas personas tienen familias y amigos que también están sufriendo.

Que cuando sacan a estos individuos de sus mentes, también están castigando a sus familias.

Tenía 5 años cuando perdí a mi padre por primera vez, y luego lo volví a perder definitivamente a los 19 años.

Esa pequeña niña de 5 años, necesitaba a alguien que luchara por ella.

Nunca me curaré por completo de esas pérdidas, pero estoy luchando por personas como mi papá, familias como la mía, y niñas como yo.

Y cada vez que alguien se une a esta pelea, tengo esperanzas.

Siento que puedo despertarme y pelear otro día.

Tenemos una meta de $15,000 para alcanzar lanzar el Fondo de Fianzas, y si alcanzamos esta meta, podremos sacar a personas de detención, de una situación peligrosa con COVID-19 en este momento.

Podremos reunir a familias.

Eso no es pequeño. Para esa niña de 5 años, eso le cambia la vida.

No estoy diciendo que esa niña no tenga que luchar algún día. Pero tal vez no tenga que luchar tanto. Tendrá la oportunidad de ser una niña.
