Detention is Family Separation

When people think of family separation, the image of enforcement officials separating a mother from her children at the border almost always comes to mind. When people think of adults in detention, there is an assumption that they have violated the law or perpetuated violence. Extending compassion in both situations, as both involve the painful and traumatizing separation of people from their loved ones, is necessary. Every minute a person spends in detention is another minute without adequate support and care.
Understanding restorative justice helps us value the humanity of people in detention, thereby recognizing that detention is a manifestation of family separation. If it feels heartbreaking to see officials separate young children from their parents at the border, then we must also acknowledge the magnitude of violence inflicted onto families when immigration enforcement officials detain a parent of teenagers. This helps us move away from the polarizing perceptions of “perfect victims” and “evil wrongdoers” because we ultimately understand the dehumanizing effects of family separation. We understand that regardless of the reason for detention, we identify immigration detention as a system that forcibly separates people from their loved ones.
Immigration detention has never been a fair nor equitable pathway to justice, but rather the opposite. It targets poor, Black, brown, and non-binary immigrants by criminalizing their existence and isolating them from their support systems. The institutions’ intentional methods of suffering and silencing extend into the separated family members, disrupting the healthy development of youth and causing incomparable amounts of stress-induced trauma onto the family system.
